Fresh Finds & Fine Wines: Explore Iowa's Farmers Markets!
Summer in Iowa means one thing: farmers markets are bursting with flavor! You'll find everything from fresh, ripe produce to homemade goodies and unique local crafts. But here's a little secret: these markets are also becoming the perfect spot to discover Iowa wines!
Our state's wine scene has really taken off. We have 100 wineries growing over 40 kinds of grapes that can handle our cold winters. That means you'll find all sorts of wines, from light, crisp whites to fruity reds and lovely rosés.
Many Iowa wineries actually set up shop at farmers markets. It's a cool chance to meet the folks who make the wine, try a few samples, and bring home a bottle (or two!) to enjoy.
And here's the best part: buying local wine at the market just makes sense with all that fresh produce. It's a natural fit! Ready to get some ideas for pairing your market finds with Iowa wine? Let's dive in!
Perfect Pairings for Fresh Summer Vegetables
The natural sweetness and often earthy notes of summer vegetables find wonderful complements in Iowa wines.
Grilled Asparagus, Zucchini, and Bell Peppers: For these smoky, slightly charred delights, reach for a crisp Edelweiss or an unoaked La Crosse. Their bright acidity and citrus notes will cut through the richness of the grilling and highlight the vegetables' natural flavors. If you're looking for something with a bit more body, a light-bodied Marquette can also be surprisingly harmonious, especially with mushrooms.
Fresh Tomato Salad with Basil: The acidity of ripe tomatoes can be tricky, but a dry Rosé (often made from Frontenac Gris or Marquette grapes) is a perfect match. Its fruity brightness and refreshing acidity will complement the tomatoes without clashing.
Sweet Corn on the Cob: The inherent sweetness of fresh Iowa corn is a dream with a slightly sweet Brianna or a fruit-forward Niagara. The wine's sweetness will echo the corn's, creating a delightful harmony. If you prefer something drier, a Vignoles with subtle oak can also be a delicious pairing.
Green Bean Salad with Feta: A zesty La Crosse or an herbaceous Frontenac Blanc will be fantastic with the crispness of green beans and the tang of feta.
Delightful Duos for Juicy Summer Fruits
Iowa's summer fruits are bursting with flavor, and the right wine can elevate them to new heights.
Strawberries, Raspberries, and Blueberries: These vibrant berries scream for a refreshing and slightly sweet partner. A sparkling Niagara or a sweet Rosé (often from Frontenac grapes) will highlight their juicy sweetness. For a drier option, a light-bodied Frontenac with its berry notes can create a lovely echo.
Peaches and Nectarines: The luscious, aromatic qualities of peaches and nectarines are best complemented by aromatic and lightly sweet wines. Consider an off-dry Brianna or a fruit-forward Edelweiss. The wine's sweetness will balance the fruit's juiciness.
Melons (Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Honeydew): For these hydrating and subtly sweet fruits, a crisp, light, and slightly sweet La Crosse or a dry Rosé will be incredibly refreshing. The wine's acidity will enhance the melon's clean flavor.
Cherries: With their sweet-tart complexity, cherries can pair well with both red and sparkling wines. A light-bodied Frontenac can pick up on the fruit notes, while a dry sparkling wine offers a delightful contrast.
